My name is Mim and I have put together this website to tell the incredible story of a pendant which has disappeared in the post, and we are dearly hoping will still come back.
The pendant was made for my wonderful cousin Eva, when she was a child in 1930s Czechoslovakia. It came back to her after she was separated from it by the Holocaust, and then once again after she gave it to a cousin's daughter as a thanks for helping her escape communist Czechoslovakia.
After her death, her widow Jan wanted the pendant to come to my younger daughter Eva, who is named after his Eva, and was born the year after her death. He sent it by post on 21 March and it disappeared in transit on 3 April.
By telling its story and making this website, I am hoping it might still be found.
What are we hoping for?
We believe that the pendant may have been stolen, given the packages small size and declared value (Jan regrets sending it by recorded delivery!). However, we still harbour hope that it may somehow have got stuck somewhere in customs, or that someone knows where it is, and is able to return it to our family.
How are we related?
Jan is my paternal grandmother's first cousin, and Eva, his wife, who he met and fell in love with in concentration camp. This makes Jan and Eva my first cousins twice removed, and my daughter Eva's first cousins three times removed! This may not sound like close family, however my father, Jan Saxl, was very close to Jan and Eva, and they were more like surrogate parents to him after his escape from Czechoslovakia in 1968, and like grandparents to me growing up (though they also have 4 actual grandchildren and now one great grandchild of their own in the US).
